Floral figurative landscape painter
William Sykes
From an early age, William Sykes has been captivated by the natural beauty of the flora and fauna of southern Africa. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Africa he discovered at an early age that he had a natural drawing ability which he cultivated throughout his school years. After leaving school he entered the commercial art scene taking a position as a Finished Artist in an advertising firm in South Africa. Later he enrolled at Art College in Cape Town, South Africa where he studied Graphic Design and Photography. Here, William received awards for Best Designer and the Agfa prize for Best Photography. His final project at college was used by Saachi & Saachi, Cape Town, and was featured in several high profile magazines in southern Africa.
In 1998 William painted a picture depicting the last flight of Captain Jack Malloch’s Spitfire (1982). The painting was reproduced in a limited edition print and featured on the cover of A Pride of Eagles’, the definitive History of the Rhodesian Air Force 1920-1980. Both the prints and the book have been featured in Airplane magazine and William was privileged to have the former Prime Minister of Rhodesia, the Hon. Ian Smith, sign copies of the print. He then went on to produce a several limited and open edition prints from African wildlife sketches and detailed pencil portraits, all of which sold out.
After college William returned to Zimbabwe and began working again in graphic design with a local advertising agency. In 2000 he took a one year break and traveled to the UK where he became inspired while exploring London’s National Gallery and the Royal Academy of Portraiture Art. This instilled a desire in him to pursue fine art rather than graphic design and upon returning to Zimbabwe in 2001 he cleaned out his studio and picked up his paint brushes and began painting full time.
In 2006 William produced a series of pencil illustrations for the travel guidebook, On Safari in Africa by Patrick Brakspear. His original paintings and limited edition prints have been exhibited in many prominent galleries throughout Africa, Australia, Canada and England.
Throughout his life, William has painted a wide range of subject matter including wildlife, landscapes, portraits, buildings, military scenes and aviation. Interestingly, he has found Floral Art to be his most rewarding subject. Taking note of the abstract beauty of the form and light of these subjects, William has developed a style with which to capture these effects on canvas. Working from his own photography, he paints blossoms in a photorealistic style and as much as twenty times their actual size. He says, “With a wide variety of reference material and a full spectrum of color available, there is certainly no shortage of inspiration for an artist. Flowers are appreciated by people all over the world and it is very satisfying to be able to create work that brings them pleasure.”
Over the years William has been influenced by several artists as well as a number of the old masters and French Impressionists, notably Monet, Degas and Renoir. Not content to merely copy these artists, however, William’s work fuses their styles with his own to create what is a uniquely contemporary vision of nature. Like many of today’s most exciting artists, William’s work brings together a studied realism with an appreciation for the abstract and mysterious beauty of natural forms. It is originality and technical precision with which William renders his vision on canvas that has lead to the unforgettable impression his work has on art-lovers everywhere.
