Kings & Queens was born from a winter morning when the world seemed to hold it's breath.
I expecting only cold air and silence. But then, through the mist, a herd of elk appeared—moving with a quiet authority that felt ancient. There was no spectacle, no drama. Just a slow procession through snow and shadow, their silhouettes softened by backlight and breath.
The paint moves like fog, like memory. I let the cold palette do the work—blue-grays and soft whites, with hints of ochre and browns for warmth where the light caught a flank or antler. Each panel of the triptych holds a piece of that moment: the approach, the passage, and the fading away.
The title, Kings and Queens, came after the painting. Not from grandeur but from grace. There was nobility in their stillness, in the way they moved without needing to be seen.
