Renso Tamse

Renso Tamse
Renso Tamse  - Wildlife Artist

Born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Renso Tamse was drawing and painting at an early age. He always knew he wanted to be an artist and was especially fond of nature. At the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts he found out he wanted to find his own way. His preference was realistic drawing and painting. ...More...

What Renso really wanted was to paint wild, mysterious natural landscapes and the animals who live there, to tell his and their story. His work is increasingly conceptual and has multiple layers in meaning, and is always about emotion. Inspired by nature, he constantly travels around the world in search of beautiful areas to lose himself in wonder.

Renso Tamse chose watercolor as a medium for its transparency and ability to capture subtle light and emotion. And he created his own technique in the medium. Starting with quick-drying layers and washes, he builds up lifelike detail while letting light shine through the paint—giving his art a vivid, almost glowing quality.

“I need to tell a story...the story of life and nature. Not only to others but also to myself. And the best way for me to tell this is with paint and paper ... through my art. This story is about the 'circle of life', that we, like animals and plants, are a part of. Anyone understands the essence of a circle, it works best if it remains unbroken. As humans, we have an essential task in this circle. This is the task of conservation.”

Renso begins each piece with sketches based on close observation-not photos. He begins with a story, sketches, and drawings. Than he prepares the paper, painting layer by layer from light to dark, and finishes with fine detail. More than realism, he aims to capture the spirit and stillness of the animal and its environment. His watercolors are rich, expressive portraits that go beyond illustration. They are complete stories in the form of a painting. From lions and wolves to swans and hummingbirds, his work reveals not just form—but soul.

“I hope my art helps people realize what a wonderful world we live in. And especially that we have to make an effort to preserve it. Beauty, nature and art always inspire, and will help people to see and open their hearts. 'You have to see and ‘feel’ animals with your own eyes, in the wild, if you want to capture the true essence of their character while creating a painting. It is my earnest belief that as we draw nearer to nature we will find a tapestry of well-being, woven from the threads of interconnectedness, promising a richer and more vibrant life for all as we acknowledge the crucial need to get closer to nature.” – Renso Tamse
