Lava Glass
Lava Glass - Lynden Over & Christine Robb

Lynden Over and Christine Robb are the world-renowned award-winning New Zealand glass artists behind Lava Glass, having met while in art school several decades ago. Their style is striking and unusual. Lynden and Christine's inspirations come from the distinctive and dramatic New Zealand landscape; its geology and its light, with original glass artwork as their canvas. ...More...

Lynden Over has developed an original range of collectable glassware, including a range of bespoke large exhibition pieces. In the past 10 years they have also created many award-winning works, producing a winning entry in the Norsewear Glass Award. Moreover, they received an ‘Excellence in Glass’ award in the Molly Morpeth Canaday Exhibition. Lynden’s creative use of color was acknowledged in the NZ Society of Glass Exhibition, winning the Color Award and Lynden was commissioned to create a public sculpture for Taupo Town Centre. The 'Cloak of Tia' can be admired in front of the Great Lake Center. Lynden's glass sculpture garden at Lava Glass is one of the must do tourist attractions of the region. It comprises more than 1000 glass sculptures. The Lava Glass sculpture garden is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. It has been endorsed as a national 'Garden of Significance' by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.

Trailing colored glass in layers over each piece are Lynden Over’s and Christine Robb's signature technique. In doing so they create a rich painterly look where each creation is totally unique. They have worked on a range of large glass works, creating many award-winning art glass pieces. Lynden and Christine also believe in going the extra mile for sustainability. In 2021 Lava Glass achieved carbon neutral status and is the first glassblowing studio in the world to have done so! Their efforts prove that it is absolutely possible to pursue the art of glassblowing and work with glass, an energy-intensive material with a large carbon footprint, while upholding environmental values.

"The emotion and power of the New Zealand landscape is a continual source of inspiration for our art. Through the medium of glass we respond to the lights and shades of our land, from the reflections of the earthy sun-drenched Central Plateau through to the striking rich colors of the New Zealand coastlines. Using the translucent, reflective qualities of glass, and the matte finish we can create pieces which change in different lights just as the landscape changes. We also work to achieve a textural quality on the surface of each piece, again reflecting the organic composition of nature. Continually challenged by the qualities of glass developing, we are always looking for ways to manipulate the liquid material to evoke the beauty of our place."

"We have been working together as full-time glass artists in New Zealand for 28 years. In doing so we have continually refined our techniques and processes, developing some very unique glass making that captures the look and feel of our rugged landscapes. Our pieces are exhibited in both public and private collections throughout the world" - Lynden Over & Christine Robb....Less...
