The Legend of Dark Mane

Through the lens of Jackie Boshoff.

My very first safari on Djuma began quietly — almost too quietly. No elephants, hardly any plains game, just the stillness of the northern Sabi Sands settling into evening. We stopped for sundowners, accepting
that some drives are simply gentle.

And then, halfway through our drinks, a lion roared. In seconds, everything shifted. Drinks were finished in a rush, the cooler packed, and we were back on the vehicle, following the sound that rolled across the landscape. Not far from where we had been standing, he appeared: Dark Mane, the Northern Avoca male, one of three brothers in the Avoca coalition.

My first ever safari photograph was of him. We spent nearly 45 minutes with him that evening, watching him breathe, watching him own the land with the quiet authority of a king. Just before settling into sleep, he gifted us one final, earth-shaking roar. A moment neither of us will ever forget.

Dark Mane was a favourite for many. He sired numerous cubs and ruled the Talamati pride for years, even after recovering from a serious foot injury. His strength was undeniable, his legacy woven into the
fabric of the northern Sabi Sands. When he was injured during a buffalo hunt — footage that shocked everyone who saw it — he fought as long as he could. He passed away a few days later on Djuma soil,
the land he had ruled with such presence.

After his death, the Avoca coalition continued briefly. Blondie succumbed to TB, and Mohawk eventually dispersed under pressure from the S8 male. Yet Dark Mane remains the most enduring symbol of their reign — a lion remembered not only for his power, but for the unforgettable moments he gave us.
